Hi everyone! Not sure what exactly to write about, but maybe talking about my article that I chose for my essay is a good idea? Well I found an article on The Sacramento Bee newspaper and it was titled " Honoring Adoption" my article was stating the fact that adoption is  a good thing to do and that mothers who unselfishly give there babies for adoption is a great idea instead of having an abortion. It caught my attention that they mentioned abortion and adoption on this article. It's true abortion shouldn't be the answer , instead the child should be given for adoption. That is just my opinion. Also my article mentioned that how come great stories like an adoption isn't  so public and I agree. We don't often hear stories about children being adopted. But I was also wondering why have we not heard of same sex couples adopting? Can same sex couples adopt in certain places? I think it would be wonderful if same sex couples were able to adopt and posted publicly to show other same sex couples that they can also adopt. However, I am not sure what are the rules to adopt a child.

Introduction to Women and Gender Studies
WMS 050 – Fall 2014

Office Hours: Held in the Women and Gender Studies Suite, Hart Hall, 1st Floor
Tuesdays, 3:30pm to 5pm
Thursdays, 9:30am to 10:30am


Expectations:

Attend class on time, be prepared to discuss the material, and contribute to a respectful classroom environment through your punctuality, listening, and participation.  If you find an issue or have concern with your TA, another student, or a comment or aspect brought up during discussion, please reach out to me privately or during office hours rather than taking this up during class time.

Participation (within the classroom and through the section blog) is a part of your grade.

Bring all reading materials to class as we may refer to them in discussion.

Technology:

Laptops, tablets, or cell phones may be used for school purposes only.  If technology becomes disruptive to your learning or to the learning of others, you will be asked to no longer use your device(s).

I check email daily, however, I may not get to your email immediately. Please be patient, and I will get to your email within 48 hours.

Attendance:

You are expected to attend all sections of class.  If for some reason you are unable to make class, it is your responsibility to reach out to another student to get notes and materials.

Late Assignments:

Late assignments will not be accepted, and will only be considered for extreme documented circumstances.


Academic Dishonesty

No plagiarism or other academic dishonesty will be tolerated.  Plagiarism consists of copying text from a website, book, fellow student, or other source without crediting that source.  It also consists of copying ideas without crediting them.  If you plagiarize you will receive a zero for the assignment.


Electronic Assignment Submission

If you submit assignments electronically, please submit one document titled as follows: “LastName_FirstName_AssignmentName_Date.”  For example if I turned in the Seeing Gender assignment I would title it “Fine_Alex_SeeingGender_10.15.14.”  This formatting is part of your grade.

Part of your participation grade includes your posts and comments on the class section blog. 

You are required to make three posts throughout the quarter – one in the first three weeks of the quarter, one in weeks 4-6 and one in weeks 7-9. 

You are also required to make three comments on your classmates’ posts throughout the quarter – one in the first three weeks of the quarter, one in weeks 4-6 and one in weeks 7-9. 

Your posts should relate to that week’s readings or discussions from lecture, drawing upon the topics or themes from the text.  You must bring in an example from media (i.e. a recent news article, a photograph, painting, music/music video, or film clip, etc.)

Course Requirements:
Preparation for class & participation. (10%)
Attendance in lecture and discussion section is mandatory. Meaningful, constructive participation in class and section will raise your participation grade. Complete the day’s assigned reading before each class and use that preparation as the basis for participation in class discussions.

Quizzes. (20%)
There will be 5 short quizzes as indicated on the syllabus. The quizzes will be on the day’s assigned reading. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class and can not be made up if missed. Students are required to complete 4 of the 5 quizzes.  

Critical reading of gender in journalism/foundation: (10%) This 3 - 5 page paper is based on your critical reading of the way in which gender is represented in an article from the news. The topic of the article does not have to be gender. For example you may write about the representation of a woman in a newspaper article about the conflict in Ukraine, or you could write about how a transgendered person is represented in an article about local politics. Another approach would be to compare the way people of different genders are written about within the same news article. Be sure to consider gender as it intersects with other dimensions of identity such as race, ethnicity, class, or sexuality. Connect your observations to the assigned class readings. Pages 60 – 62 of  WL directly address the representation of gender in the media. Issues of representation can also be found throughout the textbook and the additional assigned readings. Demonstrate your use of the reading by using a minimum of one quotation from one chapter, reading, or assigned article. When you quote a reading, provide a page number and citation to the source. Be sure to include a copy of the newspaper article, when you submit your paper to your TA.

Your essay should have an argument. For example you may argue that in an article about sports, attention is given to women’s appearance. Support your argument with examples from the newspaper item. For example use quotes from the article, or describe images that accompanied the article. After quoting or describing an example explain your interpretation of the example. Though the preparation assignment is only worth 10%, take this assignment seriously. It will be the foundation for your second paper.

Critical reading of gender in journalism paper: (20%) This 5 – 7 page paper builds upon your first paper. Use this opportunity to revise your first paper, deepen your analysis, and bring in concepts from assigned readings that have been covered in the second half of the course. Demonstrate your use of the readings by using a minimum of three quotations from three chapters, readings, or assigned articles.  Attach a copy of your foundation paper to this paper.

Written assignments: All written work should be typed using 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, stapled and proofread. Provide page numbers in your citations of quoted passages of assigned readings. Number your pages but do not count title pages in your pagination. Papers are due at the beginning of class. Late papers will not be accepted.


Plagiarism & Academic Dishonesty: Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s words or ideas as your own. Assignments in which there is plagiarism or academic dishonesty will receive no credit and be reported to Student Judicial Affairs. Revisions of these assignments will not be accepted. Examples of plagiarism include any instance of presenting someone else’s words as your own, copying someone else’s term paper, or copying words from a published source or from the Internet without providing attribution. Submitting the same paper to two classes is academic dishonesty.
