Hi everyone! I'm not sure what our assignment is, but I decided to write about our discussion from last week, about racist halloween costumes. Here is a link to an article that discusses racist halloween costumes: http://gawker.com/5672914/is-your-halloween-costume-racist/ The main issue with halloween is that it gives people the opportunity to essentialize an entire race and culture into its stereotypes. Over the Halloween weekend, I remember seeing Ellie Goulding, a famous singer and artist, dress up as a Native American chief. This ignorance to hundreds of years of genocide is blatantly shown on Facebook, where many others can view it, accept it as natural, and be on with their day. Even common costumes that we seem to find not offensive, such as a french maid costume, is offensive by its very nature, and we can no longer remain ignorant to it. It is time we start addressing and taking responsibility for the way we behave and how that affects and hurts other people.
